Food Date Labeling Updates Under the Trump Administration

As the new Trump administration begins shaping its policies, significant changes may be on the horizon for food labeling in the U.S., and TWeE grupo is prepared to navigate these shifts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have announced a joint Request for Information (RFI) focused on food date labeling practices, consumer understanding, and the impact of labeling on food waste and household expenses.

This RFI seeks input on a wide range of topics, including the meaning of terms like ‘Sell By,’ ‘Use By,’ and ‘Best By’, how these terms are applied to products, and whether they contribute to consumer confusion. It also explores how date labels influence grocery shopping habits, food safety decisions, and waste management. The data collected may inform future policies, guidance, or consumer education initiatives aimed at reducing premature disposal of safe, wholesome food.

Why This Matters:
The USDA and FDA estimate that 20% of food waste in households stems from confusion about date labels. Families of four are spending upwards of $1,500 annually on food that goes uneaten, and more than 60% of food waste ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental and economic challenges. This issue is central to the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics, a plan released in June 2024 to help cut food waste by 50% by 2030.
